Cecil Howell’s practice spans visual art, research, and landscape architecture, exploring through diverse media how landscapes shape us and how we, in turn, shape them.

Cecil approaches landscape as an alloy of the physical and conceptual, part bedrock and part idea. Her work studies this amalgam by digging into it and pulling up samples to examine.
Her practice centers on a series of questions about our contemporary relationship with landscape: What paradoxes emerge as humans impose boundaries on the landscape? What is our modern relationship to the sublime? What is the experience of inhabiting multiple scales, from satellite to sidewalk, at once?

Cecil treats her practice as an experiment in expressing these questions through different processes and materials. Her work does not seek answers but instead provides a space to pause and reconsider the ground beneath our feet.
